Wellness is defined as an optimum state of health: physical, emotional, psychological, social, spiritual and financial. Wellness can be increased by activities in health promotion, illness and injury prevention, self-care education and treatment. Health promotion involves improving and maintaining healthy attitudes, nutrition, active living, personal environment, and spirituality. Illness and injury prevention consists of personal illness and injury prevention as well as periodic health examinations with appropriate screening. Self-care education teaches individuals to take care of minor illnesses and injuries and to know when to seek professional help. It also assists in personal management of any chronic disease. Treatment consists of professional care from a variety of providers when required. Employee wellness can give employees healthier lifestyles, longer and healthier lives, increased self-esteem, more energy, and decreased illness and injury. For the employer, wellness activities can result in healthier and happier employees, decreased absenteeism, decreased health benefits usage, decreased injuries and compensation costs, and increased employee morale. |
