Additional Sources of Mercury are: Thermometers, Barometers, Batteries, Fluorescent lamps, Vaccines containing thimerosol, Paints, Pesticides/fungicides. Additional Effects of Mercury on Humans are: Sleep disturbances, Irritability, Memory loss, Paresthesia - a sensation of pricking on the skin, Tremors, Reduction in cognitive function, Neurotoxicity (tremors, inco-ordination, memory loss), Personality changes (irritability, shyness, nervousness), Nephrotoxicity, Tachycardis, Hypertension |
Mercury Although some human exposure to mercury is short-term due to mercury-containing equipment breakage and spills (acute exposure), most exposure occurs through regular consumption of fish contaminated with methylmercury (chronic exposure). Mercury may build up and affect the nervous system of adults if large amounts of fish contaminated with mercury are consumed. Studies of health effects of eating fish containing mercury have found that fetuses and children are more sensitive because mercury can affect the developing brain and nervous systems. Health effects of mercury due to fish consumption are subtle and difficult to recognize. Source-Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Infants born to women who ingested high concentrations of methyl mercury have been shown to exhibit CNS effects such as: mental retardation, ataxia - loss or lack of muscular coordination, deafness, constriction of the visual field, blindness, cerebral palsy. |
